Services Performed
  • Operate vehicle to produce and confirm symptom. Perform necessary diagnostic and testing procedures to confirm source of failure. Estimate needed repairs. Test drove vehicle while monitoring charging system voltage. Charging system voltage would remain at normal 13.5-14 but occasionally would rise above 16 volts at times. This is too much. Should not exceed 14.5. Brought vehicle back to the shop and shut it off. Then it would not restart. Battery voltage measures 9 volts. Test battery. Battery failed load test at 156 out of 800 cold cranking amps. Shorted cell. Installed a new battery to continue testing. Checked wiring and voltages at 3 wire alternator connector. Noticed battery light never comes on even with key on engine off. Light is directly controlled by the alternator. Grounded the light control wire at alternator connector and battery light comes on proving out the circuit and proving the alternator is not working properly. Other 2 voltage input wires to the alternator are as they should be. This vehicle needs a new battery and a new alternator. Research indicates that aftermarket alternators for this vehicle are very troublesome and OE is the best way to go with this particular application. We can put a NEW aftermarket alternator in if customer opts not to use OE part, but the labor will not be warrantied if the part fails. Customer declined repairs at this time.
